A pair of ebonised beech 19th century Sussex armchairs by Ford Madox Brown (1821 - 1893) for Morris & Co, circa 1860’s, England.
In very good solid condition with no movements to the joints. The rush seats have been newly replaced as well as the wooden strips that surround the rush seat.

"The rush seated Sussex chair was first spotted by the artist Ford Madox Brown, being made in the small village workshop of the chair and trug maker Henry Rich, in East Hoathly, Sussex. It was quickly adopted by Morris and Company, copied, and marketed by them as an Arts and Crafts product. Available in several versions, including a chair back settee and a 'Rossetti' variant, the Sussex armchair, of which these are the classic original design, was sold from Morris's Oxford Street, London and Manchester shops and even sent abroad to gErmany and the United States. The design was very versatile and although based on a distinctive vernacular tradition, it sat well in Arts and Crafts, Queen Anne Style or even Aesthetic Movement interiors." - Bonhams
