A charming and intimate watercolour by the German artist Carl Kessler, depicting the interior of Villa Würmegg in August 1919.
The work is signed, titled and dated by the artist in the upper-right corner: “Carl Kessler / Villa Würmegg / Aug. 1919.”
Carl August Kessler was born in Coburg in 1876 and studied at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts before entering the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1899, where he studied under the landscape painter Karl Raupp. He became particularly celebrated for his atmospheric watercolours of Alpine scenery, winter landscapes and historic towns, capturing the distinctive effects of changing light and weather. This detailed interior is an appealing departure from the mountain subjects for which he is best known and demonstrates his skill as an architectural and observational draughtsman.
