Celtic Revival Oak Chest

Circa 1900

An elaborately decorated oak chest with a hinged lid, moulded borders and fluted uprights extending into the legs. The panelled front features intricate Celtic knotwork flanking two stylised creatures beneath a fruiting tree.

The lid is ornamented with four portrait roundels separated by interlaced knotwork. The inscriptions appear to identify figures from Irish legend: Deirdre, Dermot (Diarmuid), Gráinne and Congal Claen.
