Georges Adilon was a French artist and architect known for combining painting, sculpture, and architecture in a very personal way. Born in Lyon in 1928, he first trained as a painter and became part of the postwar artistic movement in the city. Over time, his work evolved from figurative painting to more abstract compositions focused on texture, geometry, light, and contrast.
Alongside his work as a painter, Adilon developed a unique architectural style despite not being formally trained as an architect. He designed houses, schools, and religious buildings that often used raw concrete, unusual shapes, and carefully controlled natural light. His buildings were created almost like sculptures, with spaces designed to guide movement and create a strong emotional atmosphere.
One of his most important projects was the Sainte-Marie complex in Lyon, which became well known for its bold forms and artistic approach to architecture. Although he never achieved the same international recognition as some modernist architects of his time, Adilon is now considered an original and influential figure in twentieth-century French art and architecture. He died in 2009.
