Karl May (German-Canadian, 1901–1976)
Two Deer, 1949
Coloured chalk on paper
Born in Bohemia, Karl May studied art in Prague and Vienna and established himself as a painter during the early 1930s. His modernist work was condemned by the Nazi regime, and works by May were included in its 1937 Degenerate Art exhibition. Other works were subsequently confiscated or destroyed.
After several years in Iran, where he taught at the Academy in Tehran, May moved to Canada in 1952 and settled in the Laurentians, north of Montreal, where he continued to paint and exhibit.
